Today is day 11 of Michael’s ‘79 days’ challenge, which represents Burundi. As in other African societies, homosexuality in Burundi is not understood and remains to be a taboo. As the 2008 Burundi Penal Code states, any person who has sexual relations with someone of the same sex in Burundi may be punished with imprisonment for 3 months to 2 years, with an additional fine of up to 100,000 francs.

Michael is abstaining from meat, fish and sweet treats for 79 days to raise awareness of the punishments and discriminations that LGBTQ individuals face in the 79 countries where it is illegal to be homosexual. The money raised will go towards supporting LGBTQ young people across Southampton and Hampshire. To find out more, click here.
