Day 51 – Russia

People who identify as LGBTQ in Russia face discrimination against their sexuality and gender identity that is not experienced by heterosexual residents. Although same-sex sexual activity between adults was decriminalized in 1993, households headed by same-sex couples are ineligible for the legal protections available to heterosexual couples.

Homosexuality continues to be seen as a taboo in Russia, with 51% of Russians not wanting homosexual neighbours, and 16% of Russians believing that homosexuals should be isolated from society.

Michael is abstaining from meat, fish and sugary treat for 79 days to raise awareness of the lack of LGBTQ rights in 79 countries around the world. To find out more and to support Michael’s ‘79 Days’ challenge, click here.
