Sexual activity between people of the same gender has been illegal in India since 1860, which was when Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was first introduced. Anyone who is found to be guilty of homosexual acts are to be punished with imprisonment of up to 10 years. In addition, people who identify as LGBTQ in India face legal difficulties not experienced by heterosexual residents, with same-sex couples being unable to legally marry or obtain a civil partnership.
